Keith Zeller - Rock On
In January 2017 Keith was diagnosed with 2nd stage pancreatic cancer. This started a spiraling treatment plan including medication, emergency hospital stays, 12 weeks of chemo infusions, and soon 5 weeks of radiation, concluding with Whipple surgery to remove his pancreas. The American Society of Clinical Oncology states that the average cost of newly diagnosed pancreatic cancer patients is more than $8,000 a month. It is no wonder they need financial support for medical costs, medications and travel expense.
Keith Zeller is an exceptional musician. In 1959, while working at his dad’s roller rink 7 days a week the award winning roller skater, and guitar player was introduced to early rock and roll music by Elvis, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry. That loud music at the rink began his 58-year music career. His genius as a guitar player and skill as lead vocalist make him one of the most sought after musicians in the area.
In 2007 the Zellers lost their home when the small town of Rushford was flooded. Michele stated, “when you come through such a loss, the help from friends and strangers restores your faith in society and you come away stronger.” They survived that due to the strong support of community.
If you are a musician yourself, or if you enjoy live music, and are from Minnesota, (or Hawaii), then you have undoubtedly heard of Keith. His early band, Keith Zeller and the Starliners 1961-1969 is included in the recent book Everybody’s Heard About the Bird the True Story of 1960s Rock N Roll by Rick Shefchik. If you want a chronicle of his musical history, including recorded music and an interview, go to www.minnepaulmusic.com. In 2008 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Mid-America Music Hall of Fame, and 2013 as a member of the Memory Brothers was inducted into Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
If you attended Hambone Blues Festival 2016 in Rochester you may have heard him with Five Finger Discount, or Breast Fest in Winona he played with Classic Rockers, he has played many dances with Lost Faculties, Rutabaga Brothers, and Sisters and Company. Rita Petit Schultz says “Keith is always there to help out when he can. Time to give back to him.” Keith and Michele need support from “community” again. If you have had the opportunity to meet these kind and gracious people, or if you need to “put some faith back into society” please help with their unexpected medical expenses.
Thank you for your support.
