Car Fundraiser

My name is Alycia Harrah and I've been living here in Guatemala on and off for about a year now. I work for Colegio Bilingue Esperanza, a bilingual elementary school that is funded by a U.S. nonprofit by the name of More Than Compassion. Colegio Bilingue Esperanza provides full scholarships to 60 students from an orphanage in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. More Than Compassion also funds most of the operating costs of this orphanage, including food, water, electricity, tuition costs, and salaries of orphanage employees.


Over my past year in Guatemala, as my duties and responsibility have increased, I have realized the need for a car. I live with six other teachers from the U.S. and the U,K., and we're in charge of buying and gathering all of the supplies for the school, along with coordinating and facilitating short-term mission trips from time to time. Oftentimes, many of my daily tasks become unnecessarily difficult without the convenience of transportation. For example, buying cleaning supplies for the school - carrying gallons of bleach from the market to the school is not a fun thing to do on a hot Guatemalan day.


So I have found a car. And I want to buy it. Unfortunately, things like this cost money and it just so happens that I have none. At least not for this type of investment. The car (SUV) is a Montero Sport with plenty of room to store and transport the things to the school. The owner has agreed to let us make three payments of Q13,000 (Guatemalan currency) which comes to about $4,400.
