12 Days of Christmas

Dear friends,

I hope my email finds you well.

This year has been a challenging year for everyone around the globe, most especially to the people in my hometown in the Philippines. Since the lockdown in March 2020, when businesses have closed and stopped their operations, the majority of the common people have been struggling how to get food for their families. This happens because of the customary no-work, no-pay system for the laborers - the common people. For almost nine months now, in my little capacity, I have been sending financial aid to buy sacks of rice, meat, and other foods to help provide food for the families of a very small group of people.

The situation became worse in late October and the first week of November 2020 when two super typhoons hit my hometown. Floods and strong winds have destroyed most of the homes of these indigent families, see attached photo. This is really heartbreaking.

As we celebrate the Yuletide season (Christmas is the most awaited and most special family occasion for Filipinos, rich or poor) and as we are closing 2020, I thought of giving a decent Christmas Eve dinner (Filipinos call it “Noche Buena”) for 12 families hardest hit by the typhoon. I collaborated with four local food vendors in my hometown to provide good food these families don’t normally get to eat, to make the 2020 Noche Buena of these families still memorable, despite all that they have been through. With my limited budget and for the past months that I have been sending financial aid, I can only afford 12 families to have a happier and memorable Noche Buena. Then I thought of you --- what if I could ask help from you and provide decent dinner for more than 12 families? We could make more than 12 indigent families in my hometown happier and memorable despite all the calamities and hardships that they are going through.

For $25, here’s what each family will have for Christmas Eve dinner: palabok, chicken curry with rice, lumpia Shanghai or egg rolls, maja blanca, special puto with cheese, moist chocolate cake, and kutsinta (see attached photo).

Any amount you share is highly appreciated, and if it is not too much to ask, please share the link with your families and friends who may be able to help.

On behalf of these indigent families in my hometown in the Philippines, I thank you so much in advance for helping me in this project. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and bountiful New Year.

Sincerely,
Sheila Chavez
