Rhodes Must Fall in Oxford is an organisation determined to decolonise the space, curriculum, and institutional memory of Oxford University. We are dedicated to fighting intersectional oppression within Oxford and to critically interrogating the colonial legacies from which Oxford continues to benefit.
We are asking for any amount that you can give to help fund the costs of our campaign for decolonisation. This will help cover the costs of buying protest supplies, reimbursing speakers, travel, printing costs, banner making materials, electrical equipment and renting a storage facility for unwanted colonial iconography.
The University of Oxford is an institution that has, for centuries, produced, profited from and memorialized the violence and domination of such imperialists as Cecil Rhodes. The space of Oxford is seeped in blood; its buildings, libraries, monuments and intellectual lineage are the result of colonial pillage. The spirit of imperialism continues to live on through these buildings - and through what is inside them. The colonial lineage lives on in the iconographies, curriculum and cultural capital into which Oxford students are steeped.
At Oxford, survivors of imperialism find their own history held hostage, bequeathed to the archives by their oppressors. At Oxford, so many find their histories excluded, or almost unidentifiable in Oxford’s imperial iconographies of space. The fight against Rhodes is not a fight against one man, but against the attitude which birthed him and continues to keep his project alive: it is a mutually productive culture of violence, racism, patriarchy and colonialism.
Rhodes Must Fall Oxford is commited to the decolonisation of our university and the creation of a space where education can take a different, non-violent, form. We are committed to the removal of colonial iconography from our physical spaces and the expulsion of the colonial spirit from our textbooks and minds. Rhodes must fall, and we ask you to help us, to stand with us, to bring him down.
