Luke was born 12 weeks early weighing a tiny 2lb 11oz. After a veryshaky start, Luke was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Despite this, he is a happy, outgoing little boy who loves sport. In many ways Luke is a typical little boy who dreams of one day becoming a football commentator. He is a big Manchester United and Preston North End fan and enjoys watching and playing a variety of different sports.
Luke has Cerebral Palsy which affects most of his body but mainly his legs. He can’t stand or walk independently so relies on his wheelchair / walking frame to get around. His legs are very stiff which can be painful for him.
Luke’s Consultant from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool has confirmed that in order to improve his quality of life, the next step will be for Luke to have an operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy). This involves cutting nerves which send ‘faulty’ messages from the brain to his legs. The surgery is very invasive and will require Luke to be hospitalised for several weeks but the intensive physio and rehabilitation will last for years. This surgery is now available in the UK but is not funded by the NHS so we have been asked to find £16,000 + funding for the intense physio required afterwards.
We have been overwhelmed by the support of our local community, friends and family in raising a huge amount to fund Luke's surgery. Our mission now is to raise funds to cover the physio / equipment Luke will need to get the most out of the procedure; the more Luke puts in, the better the outcome will be. We are very lucky that Luke is motivated to put the hard work in, to make this opportunity as successful as possible. He is a very determined and brave little boy.
