The Unitate (Unity) Community Center in Tudora, Moldova
unites children and families living in challenging social situations and
provides the support they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. In
addition, we are working hard to provide opportunities that will help families
stay together.
Many children in Moldova are growing up in dysfunctional families or with no biological family at all, and many children with disabilities have not been supported by their families due to a lack of income. Employment opportunities are scarce and many adults leave the country to find jobs while their children remain at home. Equally, schools and communities have insufficient resources to meet their needs. All too often children with disabilities are not encouraged to participate in their communities. There is an overwhelming problem of alcoholism and other adverse social trends creating an insurmountable challenge for many families.
Founded in 2004, the Unitate Community Center, a children and family center provides support for at risk children from vulnerable or single parent families and children whose parent work aboard. Children receive nutrition services, educational support, psychological evaluation, social and life skills training, and participate in artistic workshops. Over 120 children have completed the program and are now graduating at higher rates and are becoming more productive members of the community.
The Unity Center has been in the community of Tudora for 9 years, and is now in need of important renovations. The local government authorities have stated that unless we make these vital reparations we will be forced to close our center! We are in need of new windows, a new door, and because we work with disabled youth we need to update our center so that it is wheelchair accessible and a safer place for those youth with disabilities. By donating to the Unitate (Unity) Community Center you will help maintain and grow these vital services.
