Broken Hill Trades Hall Restoration

Donation protected

The Broken Hill Trades Hall is located in outback NSW and is Broken Hill's most historically important building. It was built and paid for by the people of Broken Hill and stands as a proud and fitting monument to all workers past and present. The first attempt to build a hall was in 1890 when Sir Henry Parkes laid a foundation stone. The miner's strike of 1892 swallowed the unions' funds to build the hall and it wasn't until June 1898 construction commenced again and was finally completed in 1905.
Today, the Trades Hall remains one of Broken Hill's most architectural buildings. Carefully restored over many years, it still remains the headquarters of the union movement and a meeting place for the community.
Broken Hill gave the workers of Australia the 35 hour week and a campaign for humane working conditions. In 1892, 1909 and 1919/20 there were three of the largest strikes in Australian history in Broken Hill. the Trades Hall was used as a meeting place for unionists during these times.
The Trades Hall is opened to the public Monday to Friday. You can view historical memorabilia, photos, archives and the magnificent architecture on display.
We currently have a severe leaking roof and electrical issues at the Trades Hall and are asking for donations to fund the restoration work. We have applied for State and Federal funding, but this needs to be matched dollar for dollar. You can help by donating  and ensure vital works are remedied at this historical building. You can view pictures and our history on our website brokenhilltradeshall.com.
