Domestic Violence NonProfit Startup

Donation protected
I would first like to thank everyone who has taken the time to look at my GoFundMe page. My name is Monica Garza and I am a 21 year old undergraduate marketing student at The University of Texas at Dallas.

I am starting this GoFundMe to be able to start up a domestic violence foundation, specifically for the Children Survivors.

Children are affected by domestic violence in a variety of ways. Domestic violence frequently coexists with all types of child abuse: physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. It is estimated that approximately 40% of children who witness domestic violence are also physically abused. Children living with domestic violence are at risk not only physically but also psychologically and emotionally. Children from violent families are at 30% - 40% higher risk for psychopathology than those from nonviolent families. Witnessing domestic violence is a significant predictor of aggression, depression, anger, and anxiety in children (Hornor, 2005).

Domestic violence is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. Growing up in an unstable house was very difficult for me, but I never spoke about it. I feared that child services would take me and my sister away and place us in different foster families, which would make me the one who would break up my family. Up until recently, when I started to volunteer at Hope's Door, I realized there are amazing organizations that help the Survivors get back on their feet. Every day I look back and wish I could have done something to get out of that household. It wasn't until I turned 19 that I decided to remove myself from the toxic environment I was in. When I left I had nothing; I didn't have a car, phone, or money. I went from working 15 hours for a little extra money to 30+ hours while being a full time student in order to keep up with my tuition and other life expenses.
Thankfully, I had received a scholarship that semester from Jindal School of Management which I am extremely grateful for.

Recently, I was looking for scholarships/grants for Domestic Violence Survivors but found that I cannot apply for them since I do not meet the requirements. These grants are for single mothers and women who are direct survivors of intimate partner abuse. I have not been able to find grants directed towards the Children Survivors. Knowing that I am not the only Child Survivor, I want to make a non-profit organization that will provide scholarships for those children who survived domestic violence. I want to give those survivors the opportunity to become independent, to be able to visualize themselves with a diploma in their hand, and the security of being able to get an education.

My dream is for this foundation to educate the community about domestic violence, the signs, how to prevent it, and how to help. This foundation will provide college grants for Children Survivors for education purposes. These grants will come from fundraisers and sponsors.

To be able to start my foundation, I will need:
- Website (Squarespace): $140 for 1 year
- Domain (GoDaddy): $30 for .org and .com domains for 1 year
- Stock Imaging for the Website (Shutterstock): $50 for 5 images forever
- Paperwork: Articles of Incorporation, filing with Secretary of State, 501(c)(3), EIN, Custom Corporate Bylaws, Custom Bank Account (prepared by a separate company): $150

Total needed to start: $370
Extra funds will be set aside for administrative needs and grants.

I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you for helping my dreams come true.
