Harbour View’s quest for Worlds

Harbour View Odyssey of the Mind Team’s Quest for World Finals!!!

On April 16, 2016, a team of Harbour View elementary students competed in Odyssey of the Minds provincials. It was not only the first time any team from Harbour View has competed but it was also the first time for any of the team members to do so.

The team choose the problem “No-Cycle Recycle” to solve. Using recycled materials, a limited budget and a strict set of rules, the team worked for months to solve this problem. This was done with the guidance of their two coaches but without any parental help.  They then performed their solution in front of a panel of judges, family and friends and they won the provincial gold medal!

Not only did they achieve gold but they did so with the highest score of all other teams from Grade 3 to 12 solving the same problem! Their total score was 100 points higher then the silver place team.

This huge accomplishment qualified them to attend Odyssey of the Minds World Finals in Ames, Iowa, from May 25th to 28th. They will be the only team from Coquitlam to be competing in this annual competition, which includes over 800 teams from 25 countries.

We ask if you could please help this remarkable team accomplish their goal of attending World Finals by making a donation to support the cost of air travel, shipping of the team's solution, food and lodging for team members.

Thank you for your support and please keep watching our page for updates on our journey and our future fundraising activities.

“Odyssey of the Mind is a school-based, international program that promotes creative problem solving for students from kindergarten through college. Under the guidance of a coach, teams of five to seven students learn creative thinking and problem solving skills while finding innovative solutions to a variety of technical and performance problems.”

Problem 1: No-Cycle Recyle

Teams will build, ride on, and drive a no-cycle, recycling vehicle. It will pick up discarded items, adapt them in some way, and then de- liver them to places to be re-used. The vehicle must travel without pedaling for propulsion. In addition, the driver will have an assistant worker riding on the vehicle that will help process the trash items being repurposed. They will make an unplanned stop along the way and perform a random act of kindness.
