Space To Breathe

Imagine a Jew,  a Christian, and a Muslim all walk into a room ...

That's what this is about.

13 year old Hallel Yaffe Ariel, who lived in the Israeli settlement near Hebron, was sleeping in her bedroom when 19 year old Mohammad Tra'ayra came into her room and stabbed her to death. This happened on 30th June – just a few weeks ago.

There is nothing good about this.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal according to international law. Israeli Government disputes this. The settlements should not be there.

Murder of a teenager sleeping in her bed is horrific.

The murder of a teenager by another teenager is horrific, and sad, and evil.

There is nothing good in this scenario.

“Space to Breathe” creates a space that says ‘things do not have to be this way.’

Space to Breathe is a young adult inter-cultural and inter-faith engagement program that brings together young people from across the island of Ireland (British & Irish, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Agnostic, Muslim). This group will travel to Palestine and Israel at the end of the summer 2016, and will engage with Palestinian young adults in West Bank and Jewish Israeli young adults in Haifa. The vital partners in this important initiative are The Holy Land Trust, and the Leo Baeck Education centre - they are brave partners.

Then, during the autumn of 2016, the entire group – Irish, British, Palestinian, and Israeli will meet in Dublin to continue the dialogue, learning, and engagement with each other. Over 30 young people will participate this year.

Why am I crowd-funding?

Because this is hard … no government official I’ve spoken with about this project says it is a bad idea. In fact, they say the opposite – they affirm cross cultural engagement as vital for understanding and peace-building. But they have refused funding.

To date, over 24k of 40K has been raised. Due to a recent refusal of the Irish government to financially back the project, I am now crowd-funding for the first time. We only need 16k.

Turns out, the voice and the pocket of the people is what is really needed to fill the gap. We need your help.

Please help us fill the 16k gap.

It seems like a massive ask, but not if we all give what we can, share this page, and be the catalyst among our friends and networks to create opportunities for a different world.

In this world, where teenagers kill each other, why wouldn't we want to do what we can. Who knows, maybe the engagement process will change young adult lives… maybe those adult lives will move into leadership and will change other lives… maybe the world can be different.

Personally, what will I do?

I have money set aside for a couple of weeks holiday travel in August. That money will now go towards filling this gap. I’ll stay at home. This is more important.

How will you participate?

We have 30 days to fill that gap.
The deadline is 30th September

Give. Tell your friends.
Be the catalyst.
