Healing Trauma with People in Custody

Hey Everyone,
For the past 2 ½ years, I've worked for a program within the San Francisco County Jail that keeps incarcerated parents connected with their children. During this time, I"˜ve seen how trauma keeps people from living the lives they were meant to live. Many parents who have experienced deep, lifelong trauma have never healed and are trapped in unhealthy patterns.
I've often wondered whether I could do more to lead incarcerated people to recovery, and I think I've found a tool that holds unlimited potential: Somatic Experiencing. Somatic Experiencing teaches people to use their bodies' innate wisdom to overcome trauma. When we experience trauma, our bodies hold on to it. Somatic Experiencing helps people heal at the biological level, which then impacts the cognitive level and eventually heals the whole person.
This treatment has been used successfully on combat veterans, rape survivors, Holocaust survivors, people who have been in traumatic car accidents, sufferers of post-surgical trauma, and people who suffer from chronic pain. This healing would be such a gift to the people who have endured so much trauma--the kind of people I work with every day--so I've decided to enroll in the Somatic Experiencing Training and become a practitioner.
