Sadaqah Jariyah for Osman Haji Musse Samantar

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi raji’oon. 

Rest In Peace to a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend: Osman Haji Musse Samantar.

Osman was the strongest person the world has ever known. For 32 years he battled Parkinson’s disease, 21 of those years he did it silently so as to not burden or worry his wife and children. And, for the last 10 years the original Ironman overcame countless illnesses.

We share this not to bring sadness to his story, but to show how much of a fighter he really was. He endured all of this just so he could live long enough to see all of his children find loving partners to hold them when this day came, he saw his 5 beautiful grandchildren (5 months old to 18 years old) grow to carry on his legacy, and finally, so he could spend a few more precious years by my side.

Osman was a fighter who waited until all of his children gathered from across the world, until he was back home, until he held my hand and said the shahada, his final prayer. He passed peacefully with a smile on his face and for that we are eternally grateful to Allah.

May Allah widen Osman’s grave and fill it with the most beautiful light. May He grant him steadfastness. May He open the gates of jannatual firdous and welcome him inside, alongside the companions of Prophet Muhammad (saw). May he reunite with all of his loved ones. And may we meet again, alongside the flowing rivers of paradise. Ameen ya rabb.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (continuing charity), knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him”[Muslim].

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever builds a mosque, desiring thereby Allah’s pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in paradise.” [Bukhari].

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best charity is giving water to drink” [Ahmad] and he was the most generous in giving charity.
