Please Help Keep Our New Family Together

As some of you may already know, my sister and I have taken on two more daughters in August of this year. Our family suffered a tragedy—our first cousin, their mother, was murdered by her husband, their father, who went on to commit suicide.  For hours, on the night of August 17th, their father joked as he was trying to decide if he would shoot them all or just their mother and himself. The last time they saw their mother was when she shoved them out of the front door of their home, urging them to run. They heard the shots fired minutes after they heard the door lock latch. The girls were left without home and without mom and without dad. I cannot begin to imagine those minutes. I cannot begin to imagine the magnitude of such a loss.
The tragedy occurred August 17th, 2020 in Blaine, Minnesota. Realizing the girls were left without any prospects of home, my sister and I brought the girls home with us. They have been with us since August 30th—we flew them out as soon as we could arrange new rooms for them in our homes. Now the struggles of healing begin. The struggles of arranging new lives and solidifying legal guardianship and managing probate. Their parents died without wills—and every move from now on relies heavily on legal advice.
We are asking for help with medical costs and legal fees—something that has taken on an air of urgency as we are trying to protect this new family and establish legal guardianship. The girls, Veronica (15) and Victoria (13), need a sense if security and stability. Securing legal guardianship will also allow us to protect the little their parents left behind—without an attorney and established legal guardianship we cannot manage the house or protect the little their parents left behind.
The girls came to us needing dental and orthodontic care, medical care, and most importantly, psychological care. Without legal guardianship we are unable to establish health insurance and have been struggling to cover the costs out of pocket. The trauma they have gone through is immeasurable and the cost of therapy (as we all know) is high.
Sarah and I now have five daughters. They are all becoming sisters and friends. With your help we will be able to secure this new family, we will be able to provide Veronica and Victoria with everything they may need or want.
