Social Giving is a charitable initiative founded in 2020 by Warwick Business School graduate students with the goal to donate funds to small business and provide on-going  business support.  We undertake a series of social giving projects to achieve both educational and business outcomes.

As a global network of like-minded, socially conscious entrepreneurs, together we can harness the power to help others. We have the connections, drive, and skills to successfully undertake and deliver on charitable projects.

Project #1 was conceptualized in late 2020 by first looking at how we can help those adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project #1: Support the revival and growth of a Bolivian micro-enterprise

Project #1 will help young Bolivian Entrepreneur Marin Jose Hurtado revive and grow her small business in Santa Cruz preparing delicious local desserts and chocolate and toffee covered strawberries to her community, a business by which she supports her single mother and her sister. During the pandemic, Maria, her family, and her business have been quarantined for seven months, during which time Morango was completely closed for business for three. During this time, Maria invested in converting the garage in her home (shared with her mother and sister) into a small-scale factory for Morango products. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Maria has accumulated debt which further stresses her ability to acquire the raw materials she needs to continue producing her products.

Now working out of her home at full capacity, she has applied to the Social Giving network for $10,000 USD to help with increasing Morango’s capacity by

·       Purchasing a chocolate tempering machine ($2589.04 USD);

·       Purchasing a toffee shaping machine ($1449.46 USD);

·       Expanding the company’s working area;

·       Hiring two full-time staff members;

·       Establishing a marketing budget and guidance on the development and execution of a marketing plan;

·       Developing a business plan for future growth;

·       And opening their first retail location, a stand at a local mall.

We have already established a presence on the ground in partnership with the Bolivian not-for-profit, Juventud Empresa, an institution with a 28-year history which works to foster collaboration and growth of young entrepreneurs in the area. The organisation has more than 20 associations with institutions throughout Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Furthermore, in 2018 Bolivia closed the year with one of the highest economic growth rates in Latin America, with a growth rate of 4.7%. At that time, the IMF congratulated the South American country on its growth.

As the first of a series of funding projects, we will leverage the entrepreneurial skills of those involved to work with Morango on the above aspect of their business, while running a 30-day fundraising campaign to raise $10,000 USD for Morango.

With the support of your donation, Social Giving will help reinvigorate the economic growth and wellbeing of Maria’s small business.
