Restore the AME Zion Church in Montrose

Tax deductible
In 1859, the AME Zion Church on Berry Street in Montrose, PA came to life and became the home for a small congregation of black residents.  This church building is a significant part of our community's history, particularly the life freed slaves built for themselves in Montrose.  Adjacent to the AME Zion Church, you will find the William Smith House.  This home belonged to one of the first persons of color to flee slavery and settle in town in the 1840s.  Over time, the AME Zion Church and the William Smith House have deteriorated with age, and sadly they are in a current state of condemnation.

On behalf of The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies (CASS), we are raising funds to support the rehabilitation of these two historic buildings.  Our initial goal is to raise enough funds to provide the buildings with siding repairs, belfry repairs, window and door replacements, and  other small repairs. The long term goal is to achieve "occupancy status" again.

CASS is a 501(c)3 charitable organization and all donations are tax deductible. Please provide us with your name and address so we may send a note of thanks along with a letter for tax purposes.

For anyone who prefers to send payment by check, please make it out to CASS, PO Box 188, Montrose, PA 18801.

We want to thank Timmy Montana for his dedication to the repair of the AME Zion Building and for the amazing support of our community in helping with these projects. We are proud of the history and the lessons we've learned from the people who walked the halls of these buildings and we are excited for what the future holds. Thank you all for helping our cause.
