Ludovico ("Ludo") and Grecia Coppiano lost their home on April 16, 2016 in the nearly 8.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked coastal Ecuador. They live in the small town of Jama, only a 1 hour drive from the epicenter. With a population of about 1,000 inhabitants, there were more than 20 deaths from the earthquake with still more missing. Only a handful of homes were even left standing. The nearby city of Pedernales has made international news because of the destruction and death that city has faced.
My name is Scott Pirnie, and I have initiated this fund to help my dear friends, Ludo and Grecia. Ludo told me the story of what happened about 7 pm on April 16th: They were enjoying a peaceful evening at home with their two young granddaughters when the quake hit about 7 pm. The house split open, timbers shattered, pipes burst, and they thought the earth was going to swallow them up. Fortunately, they made it out alive. Ludo's wife remains in a clinic in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil, and is being treated for emotional shock, and injuries from falling bricks and wood. They are living temporarily with family in another city.
A few days later, Ludo returned to salavage what belongings he could. Only one object in the house survived without damage. A small statue of the virgin Mary. I cannot think of a more appropriate metaphor for this family's incredible strength and faith. They are grateful for what they have left.
Like so many affected by the quake, they do not have any insurance and will rely on their own work and any assistance that comes their way for rebuilding. Please consider contributing to this fund to help this family restart their lives. Any amount will make a difference..
