Aged Belgian Mules Stay Together

Donation protected
We have TWO new arrivals at Draft Gratitude!

Friday night, May20th, we had a well intended volunteer attending a high risk auction in New York.  She had agreed to bid on a Belgian gelding for us.  However, in the fast paced confusion, she ended up winning the unintended bid of a different horse.  In fact, she won the bid of a Belgian molly mule.

(A molly mule is a female mule. A Belgian mule is the offspring of a Belgian draft mare bred to a Mammoth Jack.)

Little did she know at that time, that this Belgian mule had a bonded teammate with her there at the same auction.  The teammate went through the sale next, in a panic from being separated from its bonded mate.  A private buyer won the bid on the teammate.

Thankfully, after several hours, our volunteer was able to connect with the private buyer who had purchased our Belgian mule's teammate.  The decision was made to keep the team together.  As an aged, bonded pair, being separated would have been very stressful and painful.  The private buyer allowed us to purchase the other Belgian mule in order for them to stay together.

Here they are at the auction barn:

Rebecca Roy, Founder of Draft Gratitude, made the 9 hour round trip out to New York and picked them up.  They loaded onto the trailer without hesitation.  The first stop was a gas station that graciously gave Draft Gratitude water for them.

Once they arrived safely at Draft Gratitude in Winchester, NH, they seemed thrilled to be able to stretch their legs and roll, and roll, and roll.  And roll some more.

They also enjoyed some fresh water and hay.

The next morning, they seemed fairly settled.  They are very sweet girls (molly mules). We are ever so thankful that they were able to stay together.

Rescues are often quite an adventure, this one was no exception.  They are also expensive.  This rescue has expenses that are now doubled since one became two.

$575 Cost of Belgian Mule #1
$200 Cost of Belgian Mule #2
$375 Cost of hauling, (Donated)
$500 Estimated cost of initial veterinary care ($250 ea)
$150 Estimated cost of initial farrier care ($75 ea)
$130 Estimated cost of dental float ($65 ea)
TBD Cost of de-worming, feed regime, supplements if needed.
$100 Estimated expense of GoFundMe fees.

We can't do this alone.  Will you contribute to their care by making a tax-deductable gift?  We are honored to have your help keeping these 2 old gals together and safe.  They have surely earned it!

Thank you for helping!  Please comment with your name suggestions as well.   Don't forget to share their story!
