Turn the Table Scholarship Fund
About three years ago, Nick Saligoe (DJ MetroGnome) and I (Douglas Morris) began finalizing plans to open Deckademics, Indy's first DJ school. Two months ago, we booked our 14 year old student, DJ Prince to spin an opening set with the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff. In June, our youngest student, 8 year old DJ BK will be spinning an opening set at the upcoming Michael Jackson & Prince Party at The Vogue. Needless to say, things have been going well at Deckademics DJ School.
Why "well" and not "great"? Even though Deckademics DJ School classes are affordable for most, there are many deserving kids who do not have the means or resources to attend. I was raised in a single parent home so this is a subject near and dear to me.
Deckademics is launching a new scholarship program called Turn the Tables. This fund will raise money to sponsor well deserving kids that are interested in learning the art of deejaying. We will fund this scholarship through donations and hosting various event fundraisers. Old SOUL Entertainment has pledged to donate a portion of the funds raised from the upcoming MJ / Prince ICON Party at The Vogue to this scholarship. We look forward to your support as we continue to support our youth around Indy.
How will we use the money?
Deckademics DJ School runs 5, one-week summer camps from June 13th thru July 22nd 2016. The camps run Monday - Friday, 10:30am to 2:30pm. The cost of the camps are $185 per student. The goal is to select 38 deserving, new students to use the money raised from this fund to cover half of their expenses.
$185 per student
x 38 new students
______
$7030
The public helps us raise half the balance. $3515
Deckademics DJ School will pay the rest. +$3515
How soon do we need the money?
ASAP. Summer camps start in a couple of weeks.
Why is this important?
This is not just about deejaying. It's about kids having fun. It's about giving kids something to do this summer. It's about exposing kids not only to another artform, but also a potential educational trade training / career opportunity.
As I stated at the top, I grew up in a single parent home. I know what it's like to spend summers at home with nothing to do. My family wouldn't have been able to afford this camp or any other Deckademics classes. The kids that we are targeting are me at my preteen / teenage years. Let's sow a seed into our youth.
On behalf of Nick Saligoe and myself, we'd like to thank you in advance.
