Welcome to the second-annual 24 Miles in 24 hours Fundraiser!

Introduction

My name is Jackson Rigney and I am an incoming sophomore at Lake Oswego High School. As some of you may know, it was exactly a year ago when my friend Zach and I challenged ourselves to run 24 miles in 24 hours and while doing so raised over $4600 for Respond to Racism in LO. The outpouring of support last year showed me that our community is so much stronger when we work together. This year I have decided to continue the initiative and I want to focus my efforts on food insecurity, a problem that has worsened since COVID-19. I'm excited to announce that I will be working with the local nonprofit Hunger Fighters Oregon to fundraise and collect food/household items. Their mission is to "provide reliable access to nutritious food and essential hygiene items in an inclusive, accepting environment in Lake Oswego."

Event

On Friday, August 20, I will begin my run, completing one mile on the hour for 24 hours straight. For the final mile, I will be hosting an event at the Lake Oswego High School track (address below) on Saturday, August 21st at 10 AM. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to spectate or run with me.  At the event, there will also be the option to donate food/household items. All non-perishable, non-expired food items are accepted, but recommended items are listed below.  If you aren't able to make it to the Saturday event, you can help the cause by bringing (non-perishable, non-expired) food to the Hunger Fighters' pantry (address below) at any time.

Recommended Food/Household Items:

  • Paper towels
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise
  • Ketchup
  • Jam & jelly
  • Children's masks
  • Rice meals (like Rice a Roni)
  • Pasta meals (like Pasta Roni)

Division of collected funds

The funds collected through this GoFundMe will be divided like this:

75% to Hunger Fighters Oregon

25% to Oregon Food Bank

I am dividing like this because even though food insecurity is a problem in Lake Oswego, it is just as much of a problem everywhere else too. I want the focus to stay in the community, but with some of the funds going to a statewide organization like Oregon Food Bank. There are over half a million food insecure individuals in Oregon, and Lake Oswego's food insecurity is only a small part of a major issue.

Ways to get involved

2) Bring non-perishable, non-expired food to the last mile event (or to the pantry any time)

3) Run or watch the last mile with me on Saturday, August 21st at 10 AM
