239 Oak Street the new Hungry Ghost Press

WE BOUGHT A BUILDING!
And now we need some help!
At 239 Oak Street, Hungry Ghost Press will have room to expand our retail store, zine library and our open floor production area where you can see the goods we make in house. It will also allow for the creation of the Deli Gallery and provide space for pop up markets held in conjunction with the Lonelyville Markets.
Connecting and collaborating with others in our community and beyond has always been a focus for Hungry Ghost Press and we’re excited to continue this mission in this historic building.

ABOUT THE BUILDING
239 Oak Street is a blighted mill building originally built in 1836 as part of the Weybossett Mill Complex. It's a 17,000 sq. ft. 3 floor building that runs along the north side of Oak Street off of Troy Street in our Olneyville neighborhood. It has been abandoned for several decades and is ready to be brought back to life with new purpose.
We are hoping to keep up the aesthetics of the classic 19th century New England brick mill while also making updates to ensure that it is a safe and practical space for ourselves and the community.

WHO WE ARE
We are proud to be and to employ local Rhode Island residents and act as representatives of our neighborhood where we live and work.
Hungry Ghost Press encourages our employees to experiment, create and expand their own artistic careers, brands and companies. We hope to help them bring to life their crafts as a functional businesses and to continue adding to the budding community of entrepreneurs in Rhode Island.
Currently, we are also working with the Providence Housing Authority and the Office of Economic Opportunity's paid internship program, welcoming multiple students from nearby high schools and working with them to show what it takes to run a small business and gain job experience. We also participate in the MET High School's paid internship program, where we have taken on a student for their entire four year program.

Additionally we seek out opportunities to partner with and donate to small businesses, artists and organizations in and around Rhode Island.
Some folks we work(ed) with and support!
- Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council
- Luna Community Care
- SHIP
- Providence Parks
- RI Coalition for the Homeless

WHAT WE HOPE TO BRING
Hungry Ghost Press is committed to bring jobs and internships into Olneyville with the expansion at 239 Oak St. We believe by the time we complete redevelopment of the building that Hungry Ghost Press will be able to bring on an additional mixture of 15 full time and part time employees as well as internships with the youth and young adult programs in the city.
We want to bring back the galleries of the West Side where artists of local, national and global backgrounds can come together to show and discuss art.
Along with the new 6/10 pedestrian walking bridge that will reconnect Federal Hill to Olneyville, we desire to encourage foot traffic to Olneyville Center as a destination location for people to visit and explore the area.
We also plan on working with PVD Community Fridge to host a free cold and dry pantry outside of our building for the members of the community if needed.

HOW WE'LL SPEND THIS MONEY
The Oak St. building is in need of some love and repair.
We need to
- repoint the building
- replace all existing windows
- add in a new elevator
- create functional entrances that are accessible to everyone
- redo the electric
& a few layers of paint among other things ;)

ABOUT HUNGRY GHOST PRESS
Hungry Ghost Press is an artist-owned and operated business that aims to create items in-house while learning to work with new methods of sustainable and eco friendly processes. We strive to create projects in hopes of exploring art and its relation to clothing and tangible products in a commercial world. From screen printing to sublimation with eco-friendly inks, to hand-sewn one-of-a-kind jackets and mini-collections of up-cycled vintage and deadstock clothing, to hand-carved block prints and sculpted jewelry, we love making things and working with talented artists we know, have met and employ to create new releases throughout the year.

Hungry Ghost Press started off as a small zine and art DIY book press operation in early 2016 and has since grown into a lifestyle apparel and accessory brand that aligns and works with artists, bands, and brands, both large and small, in collaborative projects.

WHAT WE DO
Hungry Ghost Press has a mission to create items in-house and to learn and work with new creation methods in hopes of exploring art and its relation to clothing and tangible products in a commercial world. From screen printing to sublimation, to hand-sewn one-of-a-kind jackets and mini collections, to hand-carved block prints and sculpted jewelry, we love making things and working with talented artists we know, have met and employ to create new releases throughout the year. Personally, the artwork Hungry Ghost Press puts out is important because so much of it is a reflection of myself and the people and artists we choose to work with. We try to create fun yet serious items, cute but grim, minimal but still garish, knowing that we all experience and enjoy these extremes and are constantly changing people in a constantly changing world.

HGPress also offers in-house design, specialty projects and creative consultation services for both small and large businesses alike as well for bands, record labels, independent artists, clothing brands and other media operations.
From logo design to limited-edition jackets or event proposals and planning people’s future merchandise releases, we can work with individuals to make something unique that fits their style.
