The Leadership Class of 2018 seeks to create intentional change around how Steamboat Springs consumes food. We hope to build accountability in young people for their food waste, and inspire local leaders to grow sustainable food practices in our resort community.
Why Composting?
Steamboat Springs is Ski Town USA because we take good care of our natural resources and try our best to live our lives in partnership with the world around us - our ranching heritage shows that our connection to the land and our favorite foods are not so far apart.
Food waste makes up approximately 15% of waste sent to the landfill, the second largest percentage behind paper/cardboard of any one material sent to landfills. Once in landfills, food waste decomposes anaerobically to produce methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times as potent as carbon dioxide. Reducing the amount of food waste going to the landfill is one of the easiest steps our community can take to fight climate change. And don’t forget! The compost we can make from recycled food scraps has many, many economic and environmental benefits including lower waste hauling fees, improved soil health and structure, increased drought resistance and a reduced need for supplemental water, fertilizers and pesticides. Our partners will use soil in their community gardens and onsite for land reclamation and to enhance growing conditions.
Students in Steamboat Springs are already learning about how to divert food waste from landfill. From 2011-2017, students in the Steamboat Springs School District were taught and expected to sort their food waste in the lunchroom and at school events. However, since food waste collection is no longer available locally, this expectation has been dropped.
Our Project Solution
We want to make food waste recycling an expectation again and inspire community leadership around sustainable food practices - and where better to do that but places of learning and community gathering. We are partnering with Colorado Mountain College, LiftUp, and Steamboat Springs Middle School to install Earth Cubes as onsite composting options to keep sustainable eating top of mind during every breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
What’s an Earth Cube?
- It’s about the size of a household washing machine
- It composts up to 50 pounds of food waste every day
- Once the Earth Cube is full, the compost breaks down into dirt in just one month
How You Can Help
This technology is new, exciting, and expensive. Top of the line Earth Cubes cost $4,500 each, which includes a special insulating layer to keep the microbes active during our cold winter months and shipping. On top of that, hope to raise an extra $1,000 to bear-proof the structures.
All we need is the help of you, our Steamboat community. If every community member donated $1, we would arrive at our goal - 3 Earth Cubes as centerpieces of our community. We would divert food waste from the landfill, build student accountability over campus food waste, and inspire local leadership in our community to decrease food waste.

About Leadership Steamboat
Since 1992, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and Colorado Mountain College have facilitated Leadership Steamboat, a leadership training program organized to develop leaders in business and community service. Each group is required to complete a group project by course completion. The 2017-2018 Leadership Steamboat class has decided to pilot an Earth Cube composting program. We’re proud to join a long list of alumni in our community who have initiated meaningful change in our community - from Yampa Valley Gives Day to the community garden on Oak Street to recycling bins on Lincoln Ave.
