Help Monika And Her Kids After Dad Is Murdered

This week, my friend Monika’s husband Nate was murdered. His death came at the end of a long struggle with alcoholism mental illness, and as a result of a huge failure of the addiction treatment system in our country. Nate was drinking heavily and was very sick. Monika, the local police, his probation officer, friends and family all tried very hard to get him the help he needed. Monika got him into a hospital in Grand Junction, where he spent two weeks heavily medicated, detoxing, on suicide watch. She also got him into a live in treatment center with the help of his probation officer. But there was a problem: the hospital in grand junction refused to keep Nate for the four days extra until he could be transported to the live in rehab facility. They said they didn’t have the staff, or the funding to keep him longer, and that they thought he was stable. Monika begged them not to turn him loose, but they did. MedicAid sent him to Granby on an Uber, and mountain family center and the Granby police department paid for a motel for him for two days in grand county. But he was in no condition to be on his own, and was heavily medicated, on nine prescriptions. He went straight to the liquor store and started drinking again. He then took a bus to Denver, and got off on Colfax. Hours later, he could not be reached by Monika on his phone. Then his phone went straight to voicemail. Four days after he was released from the hospital in grand junction, he was murdered at a hotel in Denver. There are no details, as this is an open homicide investigation. There is no suspect in custody, he is at large. Monika and the kids will need to heal, and mourn the loss of Nate. They are actively working with grief counselors. Any help with paying for expenses and missed work time for Monika, who works with me at seven eleven, would be most appreciated. Nate’s ten year old son told me that it’s very important to him for people to know what happened to his Dad. We live in a very small mountain town. The system failed Nate, despite Monika and so many others advocating for help, begging for help. Please come together and help this mom and her two boys.
