My son Chris has been in the hospital fighting for his life since August 8th. What we thought was a summer cold that turned into pneumonia turned out to be the late stages of heart failure. The doctors at our local hospital tried to get him stable, but were unable to keep his heart working well enough to keep his organs working. Chris was transferred to a hospital that has heart transplant surgeons and specialists.
That was when we discovered that the medical insurance he got a couple months ago when he turned 26 and couldn’t be on my insurance anymore, wasn’t actually medical insurance. The hospital got him enrolled in the state health plan, but there are limitations. The first month of being in the hospital, for starters.
Chris has had health struggles before. Last year he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The life he’d built fell apart. He has worked hard to rebuild, and find happiness, and he had. Then he met Angelica, the young woman he wants to marry. She brings out the best in Chris. She has been at the hospital nearly every day, reminding him why he needs to keep fighting. Seeing him happy and enjoying life, planning a future, it filled this momma’s heart.
Chris is stabilizing now, and coming home. Some of the equipment and medication he needs isn’t covered by his insurance. It’s very expensive; thousands of dollars each month, and he needs it to stay alive long enough to qualify for getting on the heart transplant list.
Chris needs time. That time costs money. The kind of money that we just don’t have. So many people have offered up prayers, and Chris made it through the worst part. What my boy needs now is time, so please donate whatever you can.
