Help Mary Shackelford Fight A Rare Form of Cancer!
Spende geschützt
The distance between MDAnderson and Arkansas is 1,200 miles round trip by car.
Approximately 5 years ago, Mary had breast cancer in her left breast. Luckily for her it was 1B, an easily treatable form of cancer. Her treatment plan of RADIATION allowed her to keep her hair and her breast! Flash forward to her annual check up at MD Anderson in Houston. She was excited and looking forward to celebrating that 5 year anniversary of being cancer FREE!
What was supposed to be a routine checkup soon turned deadly. Her heart sunk as she saw the image of her left breast on the light up like a Christmas tree on the imaging device. At first we just assumed her breast cancer had came back far more aggressively. She had 3 tumors in left breast with the largest being 5×5 cm in size. Breast cancer it was not.
This new cancer is called Angiosarcoma. For those of you who aren't familiar with Angiosarcoma, it is a high aggressive type of cancer CAUSED by RADIATION.
The very thing that was used to treat her initial cancer had infact given her a much more rare and deadly disease. It forms in the lining of blood vessels and lymph vessels. The prognosis of angiosarcoma is poor, with a reported five-year survival rate.
Her team of doctors here in Houston have her on a clinical trial of chemotherapy. Unfortunately this time she WILL lose her hair and her breast. She was also have to undergo a skin tramsflap, which is basically stretching and pulling her stomach skin up to cover where her breast once was.
Despite the heartbreaking diagnosis, Mary has remained positive and upbeat through this difficult time. However her emotional well being has taken a hard hit. For those of you who aren't familiar we have moved to the very top corner of Arkansas. We are forced to come back to Houston every 3 weeks. This ends up making it a 1,200 mile round trip by driving. We have done this 8 times already, with 4 more remaining if all goes well. The driving is taking a serious toll on not only my mother but myself, her caregiver. We would love it if we could gather enough donations to be able to fly back and forth for the remaining dates. It's too draining emotionally and physically for both of us.
This is a time when my mother is supposed to be taking it easy and resting, not undergoing even more stress. Any donation would go ONLY to airfare and help drastically in keeping sanity as this difficult time. Anything would be appreciated, and extremely helpful.
