I will be travelling to Eldoret, Kenya for a month in the new year. I will be joining a Gynecologic Oncologist who has established a relationship with the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Our overall mandate is to reduce the burden of gynecologic cancers in the Eldoret area by providing skill development to those who serve such women.
The major burden of cancer in women in the developing world is cervical cancer. In countries such as Kenya, women are not privileged to sophisticated PAP smear screening programs, and have virtually no access to the HPV vaccine. As such, the work to be done in Kenya is great.
We will be supporting ongoing education in the following areas:
1. To train local nurses to perform advanced inspection of the cervix (via colposcopy) and to treat abnormal cervical lesions.
2. To introduce local gynecologists to advanced surgical techniques for the treatment of cervical cancer.
3. To train those providing palliation to women in the advanced stages of gynecologic cancer in order to relieve suffering.
The focus of the funds raised here is to help provide supplies for the first objective above. In order to help build the colposcopy program at MOI and facilitate training, supplies are needed. 100% of the funds raised will go to buying the required medical supplies. An arrangement has been made with a medical supplier to provide the supplies at a reduced rate.
