Kidney for Gabriel part 2

Donation protected
The new battle for Gabriel and his family.

Over the last year Gabe and his family have had plenty of ups and downs.  Gabe started the year in need of a second kidney, as his first one was failing.

The family spent most of the year away from home. Gabriel didn’t get to finish fourth grade with his classmates because he and his mom were in Sioux Falls, 350 miles away, where he was on dialysis.  His dad and sister joined them whenever they could.

They moved on to the University Hospital in Minnesota.  Finally a donor kidney was on its way!  Due to some infections this surgery was delayed, but it finally happened.  Gabriel had a healthy kidney!  There were more weeks for the family in the hospital and Ronald McDonald House, more weeks away from home and work, but things were looking up.

Due to the balancing of all the meds to prevent rejection, maintain blood pressure, and take care of infections, Gabriel missed the first week of fifth grade with his classmates.

Finally he and the family got to come home to what they hoped would be a more normal school and work year.

He had his blood tested several times a week to make sure all the meds were doing their jobs.  They discovered Gabriel would need stents put in to prevent blockage in the urine tubes. He ended up having to wear a bag to collect the urine until the stent surgery could take place. This was delayed because of infection after infection.  He missed more school during this time.

Finally he and his parents were on their way back to Minnesota, over 500 miles from home, for the stent surgery.  Everything was set up and scheduled, but more infections popped up, and the antibiotics were not working.

They missed spending Halloween with Gabriel’s sister and his friends.

Finally his stents were placed.  He and his parents are still in Minnesota, hoping to soon get back to school and work and a more normal and calm life.

The Broghammers are forever grateful for all the prayers and help from friends, family, and kind strangers.  The financial burden is as great as ever. Medical costs accumulating and unforeseen time spent in Minnesota, 570 miles away, Don has missed a lot of work to be with his family, and give Gabe the support that he needs.  The Broghammers originally had asked for a kidney, and you gave.

We are now asking for help to alleviate the mountain of finances that have come.  From Don being away from his job for a percentage of the year and minimal income coming in, the surgery, mortgage, doctors, tests, travel, credit cards, utilities, medical supplies, vehicle expenses, even laundry are adding up and taking a toll.  The Broghammers need your help.  Thank you in advance for anything that you can give to help. They, as a family, are grateful.
