Expanding Leighton’s Horizon

Hello World!

This little ray of sunshine is my 5 year old son Leighton.  He is a natural born charmer with the ability to make an instant friend of a total stranger.  “Quick” trips to the grocery store are more like meet and greet excursions with Leighton. My son must acknowledge every person he encounters whether with a simple wave,  a dramatic high-five, or “hey” in his sweet little voice.  And those who come within arms reach do not leave the store without a big ole hug.  For a little man that has so much trouble verbalizing his feelings, he certainly has no trouble spreading the love!

Leighton has always fallen behind on developmental milestones, but also seemed to eventually catch up.  When words didn’t start rolling off of his tongue at the typical age, I told myself:  it will come in his own time.  But it did not.  At the age of 5, he is still considered non-verbal.  His vocabulary consists of about nine words which he incorporates with sign language that he has learned in Speech Therapy.  He knows how to communicate his basic needs such as eat, drink, bath, sleep, etc., but he still has so much more to offer that he can’t share with the world.  As endearing as my little guy is, can you imagine how frustrating it is to him to not be able to express all of the questions and ideas buzzing around in the oh so busy mind of a preschooler? This frustration manifests itself in behavioral issues that we are learning to work through.

Last October Leighton was diagnosed on the Spectrum coupled with ADHD and language disorder.  I was also recently informed that he has 2 mutations in one of his genes, but that remains a bit of question mark at this point.

Leighton was recently assessed at the Brain Balance Center of Bluffton, SC and they are confident that he can be helped immensely.  The coordinator went on the share the journey of another little boy in their program with similar challenges.  Upon entering the program he was non-verbal and extremely hyperactive.  After a short six months of Brain Balance therapy, he now walks in for his sessions greeting everyone “Hi, how are you?”

The program itself is a drug-free personalized plan that incorporates diet, sensory-motor exercise, and intensive academic training to strengthen the connection between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.  This proven method of treatment has immensely helped thousands of children evolve in such a positive way changing their social and academic lives forever.

Leighton was accepted to the Brain Balance Program and I was excited beyond words.  The joy quickly transformed to a sense of defeat and discouragement upon learning the cost of the full program.  I secured a loan in the amount of $6,000.00 to begin the initial phase, but then learned that the total cost of the program is over $17,000.00.

As a mother, being able to give my son this platform so that he can share his little voice with the world means everything to me.  The short-lived time of discouragement and disappointment was erased when I remembered how amazing God is and that He can do more than we could ever imagine.  I put my trust in Him and know that if this program be His will for Leighton, the path is already paved.  This is something that I believe in with all of my heart.  Every penny raised will go solely to the expense of treatment.  I thank each and every one of you in advance who are willing to help change my Little Man’s future forever.
