Eva's Diabetic Service Dog Training

This request has been made to provide a Diabetic Alert Dog for Eva, who is only four and suffers from type one diabetes. For the past two years, Eva has struggled to survive the ravages of diabetes.

Eva's condition means that her blood sugar levels can routinely skyrocket past 400, then drop down to near life threatening levels - all in the space of just a few hours. Eva has been hospitalized previously after almost dying from a severe hypoglycemic event.

Her short life has been filled with highs and lows, yet she remains positive, always with a smile on her face for her worried parents, who take turns checking on her each night, hourly as she sleeps to monitor her blood sugar levels.

A Diabetic Alert Dog can sense changes in blood glucose levels before they become critical. That same dog can alert her parents to any changes before conventional testing is able to detect a serious metabolic change. Instead of life crisis management, a service dog will allow both Eva and her parents the ability to sleep through the night. She will be able to attend school, play with other children...and be free of the devastating effects of unstable glucose levels.
