Benches for Homer Plessy School

$2,000 of $2,000 goal

Raised by 31 people in 2 months
Homer Plessy Community School needs an outdoor classroom.  Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré , a local nonprofit community organization, was awarded a $500 grant from the New Orleans Tricentennial Commission earlier this year to help beautify the French Quarter's only remaining school.

In partnering with Plessy, we decided the best use of the grant was to help fund and construct an outdoor classroom in the front of the building.  Our intent is to purchase four benches, each 6 feet wide, as a solid start to this classroom.  These benches will be anchored into the ground in the front of the building, along St. Philip Street.  As such, they need to be solid, safe, and attractive.  At approx. $500 each, we need a total of $2000 to fully fund this project.  $500 has already been provided by Patio Planters.

We need your help in meeting this funding goal.  Between Patio Planters members, Plessy School parents, and caring neighbors, we are confident we can have this classroom in place by late September.  Please consider giving whatever you can for this cause.

Thank you to everyone that donated and helped us reach our goal! Over the next 2-3 weeks, we will be working with the school to choose the most appropriate benches and get them ordered. We will likely install them during the Christmas break. We will keep everyone apprised of our progress.

Thanks again!

We were asked if these donations qualify as a charitable donation for tax purposes.

Our response was: Great question and one that I'm afraid I don't have a good answer to. According to the Go Fund Me website, donations to personal campaigns such as the one we opened, are generally not tax deductible.

However, Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré is the recipient of the funds and we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity (IRS EIN 72-6024618) and the ultimate benefactor is Homer Plessy Community School, another non-profit entity. We think there is a strong case to be made for counting these contributions as charitable contributions for tax purposes. However, we recommend checking with a tax professional for a firm answer.

This is the type of bench we are considering. Simple and classic style. These type of benches should last multiple years, survive well through NOLA 's grueling weather, and will be anchored into concrete piers.
