At Escuela Ceiba in León, Nicaragua, we believe that all children should have access to an education that respects them as individuals, discovers their strengths, expands their minds, and helps them flourish as happy, healthy beings.

With your help we were able to bring this type of education to a special group of scholarship students for the 2018 school year, and now we are looking ahead to the 2019 school year which begins in February 2019. We want to make sure that these six kids, who became an integral part of our community this year thanks to your contributions, can continue with Escuela Ceiba. That is why we are opening up the Escuela Ceiba Scholarship Fund again and asking for your support.

ESCUELA CEIBA’S JOURNEY

Over two years ago, a group of parents joined together to form an educational collective, with the intention of starting a school and offering León a new option for preschool and primary school education. Our goal has been to plant a seed of change in our community. To start small and grow an idea. An idea for a school in which creativity is celebrated, independence is encouraged, and asking questions is required. One where each child is treated with respect, and is listened to. A school where coloring within the lines is not required, but an open mind is.

In February 2017 we opened our doors for the first time in a shared space, offering preschool for a group of 15 kids aged 3-5, with two teachers as our only paid staff. In 2018 we moved into a larger space of our own, where we started to put down roots, planting gardens around the school and growing in staff. We opened up first grade and became certified by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education (MINED).

In December we had our first official “graduation” with MINED diplomas for our preschoolers who are moving up to first grade. The teachers and students prepared a wonderfully creative school play for their families, “A House for Hermit Crab,” and we celebrated the end of a school year which had turned out to be a lot more challenging than we could have ever imagined. The political crisis in Nicaragua, which started in April, took a huge toll on our school community  as many of our families and several staff members ended up having to leave. There were many tearful goodbyes between May and October, and there were times when we even resigned ourselves to having to close the school. But we fought for our dream and we survived. Thanks in large part to your generous donations, we made it to the end of the school year, and this remarkable achievement was worthy of some real celebration!

Next year - our third year, Escuela Ceiba will offer preschool and first and second grades, with the goal of opening an additional grade each year. We hope to resume many of the plans we had for 2018 which got waylaid by the political crisis. We will finally have a full-time director on staff, and we hope to make this a year of growth and consolidation for the school, taking learnings from our first two years to become more organized, professional and connected in the community. We aim to offer more field trips and extra-curricular activities, and continue growing our gardens and our school.

We hope you will continue on this journey with us, and we thank you for your support.
