IN SUMMARY: The political crisis in Nicaragua, which began in April 2018, has taken a huge toll on the Nicaraguan economy and resulted in major losses for our small but growing school, Escuela Ceiba. We are at risk of losing what we have worked so hard to create. But we will not give up on our school, and we need your help to make sure we can finish out this school year for the children who remain.

THE FULL STORY:
Imagine you were headed out the door to take your child to school when you discovered that there were barricades on either end of your street, manned by masked youths armed with mortars. Imagine that this continues for days, and then weeks. No vehicular movement. No garbage pick-up. No food deliveries. No ambulances. Trash builds up in the streets, supermarkets run out of eggs and bread, businesses close, schools close, and getting anywhere other than by foot or bike is impossible.
Reports of fighting and violence continue to grow. Before leaving the house now, you first check social media to see if your planned route is safe. The tourists who used to flock to your city stop coming. Those who were here, leave. The economy, which depended in large part on tourism, goes into freefall. Hotels, restaurants, tour operators and myriad other related businesses shut down due to lack of customers, leaving thousands of people unemployed.
The city becomes a ghost town at night. People lock themselves inside their houses after dark, and the previously lively evenings and nightlife of this city are completely silenced. Out of the silence, you hear occasional mortars and gunshots. On some days it is outright fighting and you have to hurry the children into an inner room where the fighting won’t sound so loud and frightful. You are thankful that Nicaragua’s propensity for fireworks has gotten your children used to this sound, and they don’t yet know that those sounds now represent something more sinister.
If all this happened in the city you loved and called home, as it has here in León, what would you do?
Some families are forced to make the difficult decision to leave. Some make the difficult decision to stay. And many don’t have a choice either way. They must stay; they have nowhere to go.
As a school serving our community, Escuela Ceiba must stay. We long to stay. Even though we have lost a significant portion of our families to this crisis - some temporarily, some permanently - we still have more than half who remain, and whose children long to get back to school and finish out their school year.
However, without the tuition from the departed families, we are at risk of losing what we have worked so hard to create. Since we are such a small and new community - these losses hit us hard. Emotionally, as well as financially. We have worked to reduce and renegotiate our expenses to a bare minimum, but even so, we are still left with a deficit.
Our students long to get back to their colorful classrooms, the green schoolyard dotted with fruit trees, their snack-time picnic tables, the school garden which they have cultivated, the yoga classes, the art room. They long to get back to their friends, their teachers, their daily routines, their learning and development. They long to get back to “normal.”
Please help us keep our dream alive during this critical time. Any amount donated will go directly to our staff, keeping the lights on and the doors open.
MORE ABOUT ESCUELA CEIBA
Two years ago, a group of parents joined together to form an educational collective, with the intention of starting a school and offering León a new option for preschool and primary school education. Our goal has been to plant a seed of change in our community. To start small and grow an idea. An idea for a school in which creativity is celebrated, independence is encouraged, and asking questions is required. One where each child is treated with respect, and is listened to. A school where coloring within the lines is not required, but an open mind is.
In February of this year, we were excited to inaugurate Escuela Ceiba’s new space for our second school year, and to welcome new families and teachers to join us on this journey. Thanks to your donations, we were also able to provide five full scholarships to low-income children from León, Nicaragua. We opened up our first grade classroom, in addition to the multi-grade preschool. We started a school garden and organic compost, enjoyed yoga classes, went on a field trip to the nearby volcano Cerro Negro, wrote a recipe book, created artistic masterpieces and sang songs. We learned about animals and plants and numbers and letters, all while playing and developing a community.
Our first semester was cut a little short due to the unfolding political crisis which forced us to close school for a few weeks. But now, as barricades have started to come down, and we adjust to the new uncertain context we live in, we plan to get back to school and start our second semester on July 11. It is our utmost priority to be able to finish out the school year, to provide our students with the educational experience they long for.

My name is Abby Augusta, I have lived in León, Nicaragua for almost 9 years, and am one of the co-founders of Escuela Ceiba. I am currently President of the Board of Escuela Ceiba, and my son attends this school. The funds donated to this campaign will be used to help cover the shortfall between our tuition income and our monthly expenses. In other words, they will be used to pay the salaries of our staff (3 teachers, 1 director, 1 assistant/cleaning person, 2 security guards), classroom materials, and to pay our monthly bills to keep the school running (electricity, water, telephone, rent, cleaning supplies, school maintenance). The funds raised from this campaign will be sent to my personal bank account in the U.S., from where I will transfer them to Escuela Ceiba's bank account in Nicaragua. Imagine que esto continúa por días, y luego semanas. No hay movimiento vehicular. No hay servicio de recogida de basura. No hay abastecimiento en los supermercados. No hay ambulancias. La basura se amontona en las calles, se agotan los huevos y el pan en las ventas, los negocios cierran, las escuelas cierran, y solo pueden moverse a pie o en bicicleta.
Los reportes de conflictos y violencia aumentan. Ahora antes de salir de la casa, usted tiene que revisar las redes sociales para ver si la ruta que planeó es segura. Los turistas que llegaban en grandes grupos a su ciudad, ahora dejan de venir. Los que estaban aquí, se van. La economía, que dependía en gran parte del turismo, sufre una caída en picado. Los hoteles, restaurantes, tour operadoras y muchos otros negocios se cierran por falta de clientes, dejando a miles de personas sin empleo.
La ciudad se vuelve una ciudad fantasma en la noche. La gente se encierra en sus casas y la vida nocturna que antes era animada ya no existe. Desde el silencio, usted escucha morteros y...disparos. Algunos días es una verdadera batalla y tiene que llevar a sus niños/as a un cuarto adentro donde no suena tan fuerte el terrible ruido. Da gracias por la costumbre nicaragüense de usar fuegos artificiales durante todo el año, porque de esa forma sus hijos/as se han acostumbrado a este ruido tan parecido, aunque no saben que esos sonidos ahora representan algo más siniestro.
Si todo esto pasara en la ciudad que usted ama y que es su hogar, ¿qué haría? Esto es lo que está pasando aquí en León-Nicaragua.
Algunas familias se han visto forzadas a tomar la difícil decisión de salir del país. Otras han tomado la difícil decisión de quedarse. Y muchas no tienen opción. Tienen que quedarse; no tienen otro lugar adonde irse.
Como escuela que sirve a nuestra comunidad, Escuela Ceiba debe continuar. Anhelamos continuar. Aunque hemos perdido un porcentaje significativo de nuestras familias por causa de la crisis - algunas temporalmente, otras de manera definitiva - todavía tenemos más de la mitad de familias que se quedan, y cuyas niñas y niños anhelan regresar a sus clases y terminar su año escolar.
Sin embargo, sin las mensualidades de las familias que se han ido, estamos en riesgo de perder todo lo que hemos conseguido y creado. Siendo una comunidad tan pequeña y nueva - estas pérdidas nos golpean muy fuerte tanto emocional como financieramente. Hemos trabajado para reducir nuestros gastos a lo más mínimo, pero aún así, nos queda un déficit.
Nuestros/as estudiantes anhelan volver a sus aulas coloridas, el patio verde lleno de árboles frutales, sus mesas de picnic para la hora de merienda, su huerto escolar que han cultivado, las clases de yoga, el salón de arte. Anhelan volver a sus amistades, sus maestras, sus rutinas diarias, su aprendizaje y desarrollo. Anhelan volver a lo “normal”.

MÁS SOBRE ESCUELA CEIBA
Hace dos años, un grupo de padres y madres nos juntamos para formar un colectivo con la intención de crear una escuela alternativa que ofreciera en León una nueva forma de entender la educación en preescolar y primaria. Nuestro objetivo ha sido sembrar una semilla de cambio en nuestra comunidad. Empezar desde abajo, con un grupo pequeño y hacer crecer la idea de Escuela Ceiba. Una escuela en la que se celebra la creatividad, se fomenta la independencia, y se requiere hacer preguntas. Una escuela en la que cada niña y niño es tratado con respeto y escuchado. Una escuela donde no se requiere colorear dentro de las líneas, pero sí una mente abierta.
En febrero de este año, nos emocionamos al inaugurar el nuevo espacio de Escuela Ceiba para nuestro segundo año escolar, y al dar la bienvenida a nuevas familias y maestras para acompañarnos en este camino. Gracias a sus donaciones, también pudimos proveer cinco becas completas a niños y niñas de bajos ingresos de León, Nicaragua. Abrimos nuestra aula de primer grado, junto con el preescolar multi-grado. Empezamos un huerto escolar y compost orgánico, disfrutamos de clases de yoga, fuimos a una excursión al volcán cercano Cerro Negro, escribimos un libro de recetas, creamos obras maestras de arte y cantamos canciones. Aprendimos sobre los animales y las plantas y los números y las letras, todo mientras jugamos y desarrollamos una comunidad.
Nuestro primer semestre tuvo cierta inestabilidad debido a la crisis política en desarrollo que nos obligó a cerrar la escuela por unas semanas. Pero ahora que inicia el segundo semestre, haremos lo posible por adecuarnos al contexto incierto en el que vivimos, y nos planteamos regresar a clases el 11 de julio. Nuestra prioridad es terminar el año escolar y proveer a nuestros/as estudiantes la experiencia educativa que anhelan.
