Phil Berggren is known to his fellow vasculitis patients as Batman--the trials he has endured and health problems he has lived through at his young age (38) make him a superhero to those with whom he shares the diagnosis of Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's Granulomatosis), a rare life-threatening form of autoimmune vasculitis. Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels and it can affect any body system or organ. In Phil's case, this includes his nose, throat, lungs, kidneys, and ears among others.
In a modern-day love story, Phil met a beautiful and loving woman on the online support forum for Wegener's patients. (www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com) As his health issues became more urgent this summer, she finally decided to get on a plane and fly across the world to be by his side. Because she has family she left behind, she needed to go back home while he was still in hospital.
Today, Phil is in intensive care at the Foothills hospital in Calgary, with severe breathing difficulties and infections. Doctors are trying to heal his lungs enough to make him eligible for a double lung transplant.
His soulmate has returned to his side. Friends around the world are praying for them both. The number one thing they need is your prayers. We are also hoping that those who can, will make a financial contribution to help with travel, food, and lost income.
