Church of the Holy Spirit

The Church of the Holy Spirit has been the bedrock of the Mattapan community for 135 years.  Since then, our mission has been to commit to  ministry, discipleship,  stewardship, evangelism and fellowship.   With that being said, our church needs an upgrade to the heating system.  We will be transitioning from oil to gas which is better for our environment.  We are asking the greater community to help us raise $250,000.00 for this project.

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit was founded in 1886 through the generous efforts of Annie Lawrence Lamb in memory of her father Arthur Rotch.  From its very beginning, the church has been a “beacon of light” to the Mattapan community and continues in that spirit as a social justice advocate for residents of Mattapan and surrounding communities, and beyond to overseas.

Our building, which is heavily used, is in major need of repairs.  This is why we are asking the greater community to help us raise $250,000.00 for Phase 3 of our project.

Over the years the church has provided space at no cost to various programs, some mentioned below, during which the Church building have been heavily utilized and minimally maintained.  In response, to the deterioration of our building, we have been fortunate to fund the replacement of the Parish Hall Roof and paint/replace wood of the Church and tower through our Capital Improvement Projects (Phase 1 &2)— at a total cost of $158,250. However, we need additional funds to complete Phase 3 improvements, to switch from oil to cost-effective and energy efficient natural gas, which in turn will lower the Church’s monthly utility expenses. In addition, there is a problem of mold in the basement, which will also be addressed.

Our facility is used for church services and church functions, as well as various programs that include:

A collaboration with Ethos Elder Services by offering space for one of its Community Café’s, the only site in Mattapan.

In collaboration with Youth and Family Enrichment Services, offers the opportunity for academic improvement and enrichment to middle and high school students through its Tutoring Program.

In the summer, CHS serves as a site for The Bishop’s Summer Academic & Enrichment Program (B-SAFE), which offers safe and fun academically enriching activities to economically disadvantaged elementary and middle school students.

The expansion of our facilities under Spiritco Inc., a subsidiary of Church of the Holy Spirit, includes the following economic developments that serve our community:

In collaboration with Action for Boston Community Development Corp. (ABCD), the Mattapan Center for Life (elderly housing)

The Milton Jones Center which houses the Mattapan Service Center provides anti-poverty services to the community, including the head-start program.

It is with courage and trust in God that we embark on new initiatives in the future that will allow us to further God's work for His honor and glory.
