Eliminate School Lunch Debt

Donation protected
Did you know that 1 in 8 Californians struggle with "food insecurity"?
I've been hearing a lot recently about the growing problem not just in our community but in the entire country with school lunch debt so I decided to learn more. Here's a few things I learned:
on average 4.6 million, or 1 out of every 8 people in California don't know where their next meal will come from
1.7 million of these are children. That means  1 out of every 5 children in California may go to bed hungry. Many of them will get their only meal at school.
In California, 7.9 million people are living in poverty and often times they don't have the money to pay for a hot lunch for their child at school. Luckily, here in California we don't refuse food to students when they can't pay, but they are still charged for that lunch and it is added to an account where they begin to see debt build.
I can't imagine being 8 years old and already  in debt. Not to mention unsure of when it can be paid, and where that next meal will come from.
The school district in our neighborhood is San Juan Unified School District, the 11th largest school district in California and last year they identified 3,400 students as homeless.
I'd like to find a way to help so I thought I would start with one school and raise the money to pay off their lunch debt. My son goes to Winston Churchill Middle School in Carmichael, CA so I called the district ( SJUSD) and found out that his school already had a debt built up of over $1700. Because that number will continue to grow, I am looking to raise $2000 for the lunch debt and anything that might be left over will be will be used for any additional debt that is added at a later date.
Winston Churchill Middle School is an amazing and fun school with amazing and fun kids and as we head into the holiday season I'd love to help out and let them and their parents focus on more joyful thoughts. It would mean so much to me if you would consider making a donation, of any amount to help pay down this debt. If you are not able to make a donation, I ask that you please pass this information along as we need to raise awareness for this important cause. If this page raises over the initial goal of $2000 I will use the money to continue paying down school lunch debt for other schools in our community. Thank you so very much for taking the time to visit this page and for any donation made.    Jennifer Freidberg
