My goal is to raise awareness of backgammon in the collegiate community and throughout the world. I believe we can have an on line competition for college students around the world to qualify for a finals event to be held every two years. The finals would be on line but monitored and major school scholarships would go to the top four places. I know this will work as I ran a very similar program in the U.S. a few years ago which created Backgammon clubs at 27 universities.
While I would serve as director and administrator of the program, I will invite the major backgammon federations around the world (any with more than 100 members) to appoint a representative to serve on the steering committee to democratically decide how the event will be structured and the money awarded. I will not take a fee for my activities--100% of all donations will go to the students.
I ask all backgammon players, tournament directors and participants, and companies interested in proving funds in return for sponsorship recognition to give generously. Further, I will personally donate a portion of all my backgammon teaching income in the future to this project.
Note that if we fall short of our goal to raise $10,000 whatever is raised will be awarded to students by the committee within the next two years and if we raise more that will also go to the final 4 students.
This is project is NOT just about giving scholarships two 4 students--it is my vision that in time the project will make students all over the world more aware of backgammon as a skill game and will encourage many to study the game, participate regularly on line and hopefully live as well, and will give them a great pastime they can enjoy with their friends and families for the rest of their life. This is just a start--in time this could grow to become a much bigger event that will attract many players, spectators and sponsors.
