An income generating opportunity to provide ongoing funding for patients with podoconiosis.
The Virunga Volcanic Mountains rise up in the northwest corner of Rwanda and provide fertile fields for subsistence farming. But the rich and fertile soil that can nourish and grow almost anything can also bring devastation to the men and women working barefoot in the fields. The constant exposure to soils laden with silica and other soil metals can lead to a debilitating condition called podoconiosis, more commonly known in its late stages as Elephantiasis, a serious malfunction of the lymphatic system that leads to lower extremity swelling.
Those suffering from this condition become outcasts where they suffer from physical, emotional and spiritual effects of being isolated. Many have to beg on the streets to survive.
The Heart with Sole Sewing Center began as an economic empowerment income generating project to provide opportunities for those with podoconiosis. Skill development is a “hands up” method of giving which can change the lives of many young men and women afflicted with this condition, who have limited resources to provide for themselves and their families. A skilled tailor provides hands on education, skill development, and quality assurance guidelines for production of bags of all styles. The seamstress is paid by the quality piece produced, while exercising to remove fluid from their swollen legs using a treadle to power the machine – a win/win approach.
