Education for Peace

Donation protected
My name is Mustafa Muhammadi. My friends Ali Yazdani and I are two Afghan students at Luther College. In March 2016, our submitted proposal for Davis Projects for Peace had been approved by Davis organization. The title of our project is Education for Peace, which is aiming to provide a better educational environment by supplying benches for Paymori school, which is located in rural area of central Afghanistan. Although we got the award from Davis organization. However, our project still lacks some funds in order to be a complete success.

Our project will provide locally produced benches for Paymori school. Each table of bench seat two children and will cost $90-$100. By providing benches locally, we will support the local community’s economy, which would benefit the life standard of the entire community and will make a better support for our project in the community. We depart Decorah to undertake work on the project on June 15th.

Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” In countries such as Afghanistan that have unstable social situations and governments, one of the primary sources of instability is the lack of education. Afghanistan has faced decades of war resulting in a weak economy and corrupt government. Due to economic failures of the government, many schools don’t have basic facilities such as benches and healthy water. Moreover, since the government is not able to fund many schools, there are only a small number of schools in rural areas which means people who live in the countryside must walk a long way to reach a school. Benches and tables are some of the most important necessities, and yet many schools do not have them. This lack of furnishings is a big concern for families and students.

Paymori is one of the schools in the Bamyan province of Afghanistan. The school building was constructed in 2004, and since the year of establishment, school is still without benches and tables. It is located in the Central Bamyan district in a rural area. Students who attend Paymori come from five different villages. This means that students walk at least half an hour and up to a maximum of three hours to reach school every day. Paymori school consists of eight classrooms and three staff rooms. The number of students who attend the school exceeds 400, of which 150 of them are girls. Students in grades 1-6 attend school for the morning shift, which is significantly colder than the afternoon shift. Attending school during the colder time of day makes the younger students, who are already more vulnerable to sickness, even more, likely to become ill. The likelihood of sickness is a significant deterrent for students attending school. Since we know that unless basic needs are met for students they will not be able to focus on higher order learning, benches and tables really are a significant impediment to education. Providing a cleaner and safer educational atmosphere for students will improve their quality of life, and we strongly believe this will inspire peace by increasing education so that residents will grow and contribute to society, both locally and globally.
