Earthbag Building Workshop Jamaica

Donation protected
Greetings, I introduce myself, my name is Melissa, I dream to build a little piece of paradise using recycled materials and create a community more aware of its environment and nature.
To do so, I receive a lot of  volunteers from all around the world who unite with the locals to create this little paradise.

The Project

In 2017, from January to April we started building the Earthbag building with 2 professionals who was teaching us from England. A team of 15 volunteers joined us.
Later in the year, we redid the experience. With the unexpected and the bad weather, our project had to be stop very often so is still not finished. On the other hand, every day we receive more volunteers and our dear neighbors get their hands dirty so we can see our project come to reality.

The goal is to offer a little oasis for our guests. To do this we include locals who teach Jamaican methods to build, so that creates jobs for the community for the future.
If you need more information about the building method, please check out this page:

But we do not want to stop there. We have a lot
ideas that are constantly coming up and that must be realized to ensure that we offer the best services and relaxation to our guests.

Tree house, outdoor kitchen, relaxation area, real estate supply, decoration - all done by hand with as many natural resources as we can find.
We want to be creative and build a place not only for tourists but also for the community.
Supporting local schools and including them in our journey towards recycling is one of our main goals.
Some parts of our small ecological village will be a garden to grow our own food (we already harvest cabbage, carrots, Kalalu, pumpkins, cucumbers and tomatoes), a natural pool has already been built, outdoor showers are already installed, a henhouse is under construction and goats are everywhere.
We already have our own bee hives, rabbits and some chickens.
We have created a meeting point to exchange between locals and foreigners; on different methods of permaculture, several different construction tips and to film documentaries during our themed evenings, to organize birthday parties, a place where farmers can sell their harvest, to enjoy meals prepared over a wood fire and to meet people from all over the world and simply enjoy life.

As mentioned, the project started in January 2017, continued in July 2017. We still have a lot to do and we need your help to do this. As said, several volunteers arrive every day and they are ready as well as the locals to finish the project. We only need materials.

Thus, every hundred of the foundations will go directly into the construction of the sack houses.

The magic yellow Bus

One part of the project Jardin D‘Eden is the Magic Yellow Bus. A small business I opened about two years ago. The Bus is a small bar where you can get all the small  you need (dinks, snacks and soon local vegetables,...) With this I try to support the local farmers, selling their crop and makes sure the community can get all the small necessities you need without always going to the next small town. In the evening it‘s a local meeting point where you can just meet and talk to friends but me and my crew also organise events like movie nights, parties, etc. A small outdoor kitchen with wood fire is attached to the bus. Here food is prepared all day long. Mainly for volunteers but also for costumers who need a snack.

The people

I am a mother of two wonderful children 14 years old and 9 years old. I used to sing, dance and produce Shows while living in Montreal. Coming from a family of artists music plays a very important role in my life.
My other passion is to work with people and especially kids. I used to work as a social worker with teenage girls and helped them to cope with daily life and problems, giving positive energy and help them find what’s important for their life.
Almost five years ago I decided to leave Montreal and move closer to nature, to seek what's important in life... understanding REAL life, family and the importance of community...back to the roots - moving to Jamaica.
In Jamaica I live peacefully in a district which is called Eden and I created the Jardin D'Eden Jamaica.

The dream

I created the Jardin D’Eden project over three years ago. The idea of connecting the simple Jamaican country lifestyle with community work, the beautiful nature and tourism, grew over the last few months. And in order to bring the real Jamaica to tourists, support local farmers and the community and give volunteers the time of their life in Jamaica, I recruited community members, former volunteers, guests and friends from all over the world to join me in the project. A small team has formed and together we want to make something great happen.
In the green hills of the Eden District, St. James we want to build a small eco village with recycled materials and sustainable building methods. We want to construct with the Earthbag Building method. An easy and environmental friendly way to build.

We love life and the people it allows us to meet. Our place is a home of honesty, love, respect and listening. To give that feeling to all our volunteers, guests and visitors we need your help.

Help us to make the beautiful Eden district and community grow into a real paradise.
