East African Orphanage - Arusha

Donation protected
I started my volunteer project (setup through Projects Abroad) at East African Orphanage at the beginning of October.   My first impressions mirrored that of my fellow German volunteers (who had already been there for some time, setup through Step Africa):  The children are absolutely beautiful but the orphanage/school is in desperate need of help in pretty much every single area.  Although our first priority is to help teach and care for the children, we have also been compelled to try and make this a better school and eventually  home for these amazing kids.  This is why we have all banded together to form a coalition (Justin from Canada and Verena, Melanie, Julie, Julia and Marlence from Germany) to help raise much needed funds for this orphanage.

Details of the Orphanage:
East African Orphanage is located in Arusha, Tanzania and has been around for the last couple of years.  It currently provides basic school education for disadvantaged children and young teenagers from the local community.  Each child/teenager at East African Orphanage has their own unique story....some are orphans, others are street kids living with adopted families, there are also a few that are mentally disabled.   Although each child comes from such unfortunate circumstances, they have an energy and a spirit that could inspire the most pessimistic of souls.

The East African Orphanage school provides a safe haven for these kids during the day and it is also a place where they can get some basic education.   The problem is that the school is in desperate need of support and the only way for it to raise funds is through donations.

Where will the funds go?
All the funds raised will go directly to the volunteers working at the orphanage.  We  will then in turn use the money raised to directly pay for school supplies, maintenance, building renovations etc. etc.

Perimeter Walls/School Project
Our goal is to raise $5,000 so that we can build a perimeter walls/fence around the entire school.  Part of the wall will form the back wall of all of the classrooms.  Currently the classrooms are all separated by tarps and there are no solid walls to the entire school.  If we don't quite hit our target then we will use the funds for part of the wall or to improve other issues within the school.

Why a perimeter wall/fence?
1. Security - currently there is nothing stopping anyone from coming to the school and stealing.  Local people in the community have been stealing school supplies, chairs, food etc. from the orphanage
2.Once the fence is built it will allow for further projects like building walls between the classrooms, increasing supplies for the school with less threat of robbery etc.
3. Eventually this school will also have a dormitory for the children to live and sleep and the fence will provide them with the protection they need  and will also make them feel safe.

Asante sana! (Thanks a lot in Swahili)
