Dwight and Nona's Moving Fund

Pat the Cat (pictured here), Emily the cat, Dwight and I have ended up in a precarious living situation.  We have a moving date (Thursday, October 5th) but no house to go to.  Due to extenuating circumstances, we have not been able to find a place to live.  We have been looking since June!  Our stuff will be moved to a storage unit until we can find a place to live.  In order to move into a new place, we will need first and last month rent plus a security deposit.  We will also need money to close out the utilities at our old address and to pay for other moving expenses.  We also need money to shampoo the rug, and do some house cleaning.

We need funds immediately and over the next month.  Not only do we have to be out of our current house by October 8, but we need to be ready to pay any unknown expenses that may come up.

Receiving financial help for this move will keep us housed and will allow us to keep our cats, who are family to us.  We both do our work out of our home. Hence, without a house to live in, we can’t earn a living!  It will also be extremely difficult for Nona to go to graduate school or do community service without a place to live.  We are currently living in “survival” mode, and miss doing the things that make us happy, including socializing and being there for our friends.

We will be forever grateful for any support you can give us. We love each and every one of you dear friends who have helped us in the past.  We know the time it takes to haul boxes and furniture, send prayers and good wishes, consult with us on practical matters, and comfort us.  Those are gifts to be treasured forever.

LATEST UPDATE - Still no place to live. We couldn't have survived this far without your help. I am trying to be grateful for at least one thing a day. The biggest gratitude is all of you. You keep us going during one of the darkest times of our lives. This is especially hard on Dwight. With his computer and entire professional library in storage, a huge chunk of his life has been taken from him. He so loves archaeology and anthropology, and now the tools to do what he loves the most have been taken from him. Part of the time, I feel like Indiana Jones, we are doing fine, yet another scary thing happens to us, and we have to make decisions that can have consequences. We "we fly by the seat of our pants." Once we come up with one strategy, like Indiana, a new curve ball is thrown at us an we change our strategy. Eventually, we end up on the precipice of a cliff and we know we have to jump off. As we are falling, we don't know whether we are going to crash and burn or whether, by some miracle we are rescued from serious injury of death. Somehow, we do get through. But the down times can be hard to deal with and that is when your support has meant the most of us. On two different occasions this week we didn't have enough money to pay our hotel bill. The next morning at 6 a.m., one or more of you made a donation and we have the money to stay in the hotel and pay our storage fee (where all our belongings are). I am not sure if there is a deeper meaning to this; perhaps. I am learning to have more reliance on the goodness of the universe, no matter how bad things get. I have to say that it can be lonely out here, on the edge of homelessness, and every phone we get lifts us up. Visits would even be better. One of my new friends didn't have enough money to contribute to Go Fund Me. She wondered what she could do, and I replied "just be my friend and hang out with me occasionally." So we are going to do some things together. One thing we will be doing is to find the cheapest, funnest thing to do and share it with one another. We may even decide who came up with the best idea. Free and wonderful fun will be the true prize winner. So we are putting more money into Go fund me, as we continue to pursue the daunting task of finding a place to live.

Dear Friends, Still URGENT NEED. I can't believe how expensive everything is. With all your generous donations, we paid for our move by renting 2 U-hauls, using a friends' truck and hiring professional movers. We put everything in storage. We have new big monthly fee for that. We are living at Motel 6, because we haven't been able to find a rental. To rent a house, we pay $40 to $70 dollars for an "application fee" so they can run a credit check and decide whether or not to rent to us. When Dwight got sick, our credit was destroyed (not uncommon in the United States), and we have not been able to raise our scores. Then when we still couldn't rent a place, we stayed in Motel 6 (lousy motel and financial drain). We have one more night there before we run out of funds. We have gone to Social Service agencies and since were $600 a year above the poverty line (they base this in last year's federal tax return) they won't help us. So now, we are between a rock and a hard place. Any help, funds, ideas, good ju ju, prayers, healing dances, etc. all welcome. From Dwight, Nona, Pat the Cat, and Emily the Cat. We are grateful for your love and support; how else could we get through this?

The moving saga is not over. Without the help of all of you, we couldn't have made it this far! We were able to pay for the move and put our stuff is in storage. However, we still need to find a place to live. In Chico, you have to pay a huge application fee for the privilege of being considered to rent the place. Since Dwight's amputation in 2010, our credit got destroyed and it is taking us years to get the scores back up, even with paying down our debts on a steady basis. We don't have a lease guarantor, and without that, no property manager/management group will consider you as a tenant. There are a few individual landlords that may consider us; few and far between. For every application for a rental, you are expected to pay a fee of $20-35 per person. A married couple is considered as 2 separate tenants, and so we have to pay two fees ($40-$70 dollars per application). If we paid an application fee for 10 places to rent, we would be spending between $400 and $700!!! It is highway robbery! We are currently staying in Motel 6 and our money is being eaten away quickly. Any prayers, leads, or other help you might want to offer will be deeply appreciated. Meanwhile we are doing everything we can to put a roof over our heads, and the heads of Patsy and Emily, the cats as well. They are now getting along together except for the occasional spat (chase, claw, hiss). They are a delight to us and they are family to us. We are grateful for friends like all of you. Many people criticize Facebook for the ads, tasteless posts, etc., but not me. Facebook has mended old relationships that needed mending, connected me with friends I have lost contact with, introduced me to new friends from all over the world, helped me participate in a great on-line community of people who are committed to social justice and peace. Thanks for your support; it is a true lifeline.

Hi friends, If you have had any problems adding money to our GoFundMe Account, you can try again now. One of our friends had a hard time contributing to our account. Apparently I was supposed to set up some sort of Pay Pal thingy and I hadn't yet done that. I haven't been checking email every day, so I probably did not respond to their message in a timely fashion. Now that I answered all their questions online, everything should be fine. Thank you Karen Gardner for alerting us to this. If you have any problems with putting money into our GoFundMe account, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Also, I have been late in thank you for your support and contribution, it is because I have gotten bogged down in moving and submitting paperwork to secure a place to live. Thanks to all of you; we didn't realize we had so many friends, loving and caring friends. You are making a time that is hard for us more bearable. It really would have been terrible if you had not been there. There are times when I haven't been grateful enough and my nerves are frayed; that is probably normal to someone who is averaging 3 hours of sleep at night and immersed in the minutia of life in order to survive!
