Dunbar School Memorial, Centralia MO
Donation protected
Over the years, many Centralians have talked about how to memorialize Dunbar School, where Centralia's African-American students attended Grades 1-8 in the latter part of the segregation period, 1927-1956.
In September 2019, Centralia Parks Department approved a proposal to place a historical marker about Dunbar School in Jaycees Park, a few blocks from the out-of-the-way site on W. Wilson, as a good way to commemorate the experience of our neighbors' and their dedicated teachers.
It will cost about $3,000 to have the historical marker made and mounted in Jaycees Park, and it looks feasible to have it in place in 2020, with your help.
We also need authentic photos of the Dunbar School students and teachers to add to the marker (the photo above is the only one we've found so far).
The volunteers who have been working on this marker project are Erle Bennett (Centralia Parks and Recreation), Lorry Myers, Henry ("Sonny") Tucker, and Dave Lincoln.
