Service Learning in Dominican Republic

Donation protected
Urban youth from low income areas face disproportionate barriers to travel and obtain educational experiences. We are looking for supporters like you that can help a group of young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning adventures and activities beyond their classrooms or neighborhoods.

Who are we?
We are an energetic group of 12 Boston high school students and 3 teachers that would like to complete a Service Learning Trip to the Dominican Republic in April, 2015. We need help to make this a reality.

Our School:
Boston Green Academy's mission is to graduate all of our students prepared for success in college and the workforce. As a public school that is deeply vested in cultivating a highly skilled and actively engaged global citizenry, we prepare all of our students to be leaders in local and global environmental stewardship and activism, to live their lives responsibly and sustainably, and to take advantage of employment opportunities in the burgeoning green economy.

Why do we want to go?
We feel that community service is an important part of our lives. The students are enrolled in a yearlong course in which they complete academic work about reforestation and water conservation while performing local community service in the city of Boston. They also conduct fundraising activities for this Service Learning Trip. They will complete 35 hours of work once abroad.

Service Learning Partners:
"˜Deep Roots' is a scholastically intensive program akin to a hybrid of an academic exchange program and a service-learning trip. The students' home base is the Escuela Nacional Forestal's main headquarters in Jarabacoa, and they spend most of their time engaged in activities there, though they will also work on the Salto de Jimenoa campus and in a local community with the Brigada Verde.

Boston Green Academy students will get the opportunity to join the Environmental School students and the local Brigada Verde group to work on some of the local projects going on around Jarabacoa. For the majority of each weekday, students will be actively involved in all types of service work and will spend most of the day outside, learning hands-on with students from the school.

This program is a true chance for students to see the accomplishments of eco-conscious community organizations in Jarabacoa as well as participate in their ongoing initiatives and discussions about future project goals -- exactly the sort of transcultural collaborations that the Brigada Verde creates and promotes. A partnership with our students is an important link in the international chain because the Brigada Verde's mission is global.

The Brigada Verde is a community youth organization dedicated to promoting environmentally responsible practices in the tourism industry and educating about the economic importance of ecologically responsible tourism. Established by the Peace Corp in 2004 as part of a national initiative to create volunteer opportunities for Dominican youth, their mission is to empower youth groups to protect the environment and reduce environmental degradation.
