Of the more than 5,000 homeless people in Toronto, city officials estimate that almost 10% sleep on the city’s streets on any given night due to a lack of shelter space. For these particularly marginalized individuals, the tragedy of homelessness is only made worse by the harsh realities of winter.

While statistics are not maintained, it is clear that too many die on the city’s frigid streets, such as during a particularly cold stretch in January 2015 when three people lost their lives. One man spent his final hours in jeans and a t-shirt in a bus shelter in Dundas Square. The obvious questions are how did this happen, and could anything have been done to help this man and others in situations like his?
Please join OPTIMUS | SBR on its 2nd annual Drive for Warmth as it partners with Engage and Change to support the Project Winter Survival Initiative. Now in its 16th year, the project is intended to raise funds to purchase and distribute survival kits to those that spend cold winter nights on the street. For just $25, you can help provide a kit to keep someone warm and safe this winter.
