I have written a children's book for young kids who have lost a sibling and am raising funds to self-publish it. My illustrator, Jess Regan, is a high school senior who is a childhood cancer survivor and so talented! Our goal is to raise the funds by December 2018 so this book can be published after the New Year. The sooner, the better!
#dontforgetthesiblings. This hashtag has been trending on social media - finally - supporting siblings who have a sister or brother battling illness or who have passed on. Siblings are the silent grievers. They have their own issues surrounding loss - especially when a sibling has died. Hardly any resources are available to them.
I know this all too well as my daughter, Savannah, died at age 6 from cancer. Her sister, and my surviving daughter, Jasmin, was only 4 years old at that time. Jasmin is now 18 but has had her share of grief, anger, sadness, loneliness and pain from Savannah's passing.
Meet Jasmin ... she is sweet, caring and observant. She wants young siblings to know they are not alone in losing a sibling. At age 4, Jasmin loses her sister to cancer. From visiting her sister in the hospital to helping with medicine, Jasmin recollects the times she supported her sister. She also shares the legacy her sister left her and takes comfort in knowing she will always be a sister.
An excerpt from the book:
"My dad would go to the hospital after work to see my big sister and my mom. My dad would then come home at night to be with me, but I wanted us all to be together."
**We hope this book will be the first in a series for all of the extraordinary siblings out there.**
