Dolores the Crossing Guard Retires!

Dolores has been the crossing guard at Garfield Elementary School in Collingswood for as long as anyone can remember. Like a character from The Canterbury Tales, she's the first person the children see when they arrive in the morning and the last person they see on their way home, dispensing thousands of hugs and kisses, dabbing away tears and wiping sticky fingers. She is the steadfast and welcoming Gatekeeper of legend. Persevering through extremes of weather while wrangling psychotic drivers, jaywalkers and questionable parking choices, Dolores does her community proud. She plans to retire at the end of the school year and we are bereft at the thought of missing this sweet and lovely lady every day. In the words of Chaucer, “Truly she was of elegant deportment and very pleasing and amiable in bearing. She took pains to counterfeit the manners of the court and to be dignified in behavior and to be held worthy of reverence.”   We want to raise $5300 to pay her taxes for a year.
