Love and Support for Doug and Cindy

Donation protected
Fifteen years ago Doug Porter was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes which led to the discovery of high counts of C Enzymes in his liver and he was also diagnosed with Hepatitis C.

For many years the Hepatitis was the lesser of the two evils. However,  in the past five years the Hepatitis has really taken its toll on his liver and over-all health. The virus weakened him and prevented him from working full time, and ultimately he has been unable to work for almost three years now.

Just this past year Doug was able to take a fairly new medicine that had a seventy percent chance of curing him of his Hepatitis C. After taking the medicine his blood showed no signs of the virus. While he is "cured" of the Hepatitis, it has still left his liver severly scarred and damaged. He has Stage Four Cirrhosis of the liver... Stage Five is terminal.  Due to the wrecked state of his liver Doug has been on a transplant list for quite some time. Recent news has not only put his hopes of transplant on hold but have almost definitely removed him from a transplant list for the time being.

After a routine visit "lesions" were discovered on Doug's liver and were immediately tested to determine whether they were cancerous. The lesion that was cancerous has since been described as an inoperable egg sized tumor as it is growing in and around a vessel.

At this time Doug is chapperoned to KU Med at least twice a week for scheduled weekly visits to drain his stomach of 8+ liters of fluids, MRI's, appointments with his oncologist and appointments with his liver specialist. He started Chemo several weeks ago and now has to start Radiation due to the ineffectiveness of the Chemo. At this point all medications have to be pre-approved by his insurance because of the substantials costs.

Cancer is not something you can ever completely understand or appreciate until you are in the midst of it or seeing your loved one struggle. Doug and Cindy are such loving parents and grandparents. Doug is in this battle to win and his loving, hard-working wife has been a rock through it all. We are all so touched by the love and support we have received and we have Faith in Doug's recovered health.

Our family greatly appreciates your prayers, love, hope and support to lift us up.
