Divine Daycare and Junior School

Our names are Hailee and Melissa, and we are nursing students from Canada who are currently in Uganda completing an internship in child and maternal health. While placed at Divine Daycare and Junior School in Kajjansi, Uganda, we had the opportunity to learn about this incredible organization from the founder and the children who attend this school.
Divine Daycare and Junior school was founded by Deborah Gita, a registered nurse after she identified gaps in the educational and healthcare system that she could not ignore. Deborah noticed that children with physical disabilities, HIV/AIDS, and albanism were often discriminated against and denied an education/appropriate healthcare due to the stigma associated with such conditions. For this reason, Deborah decided to start her own organization that could provide both a safe space to receive a formal education, as well as provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of many health-related issues - all in one place! In order to accomplish this incredible feat, Deborah hired 6 full-time teachers and 2 registered nurses to provide onsite education and healthcare. She has also partnered with physicians at many pediatric hospitals to provide further medical treatment when required. Since its start in 2013, Divine Daycare and Junior School now have 80 students from both advantaged and disadvantaged families, and also provides free boarding for children from child-headed and poverty-stricken communities, whose families could not otherwise afford to send their children to school.
In order to keep this organization up and running, Deborah has used her entire life savings and numerous bank loans to fund her efforts. In addition, Deborah has welcomed many orphaned students into her home and carries them to school each day on her back, as she cannot afford a vehicle. Currently, she receives donations from advantaged families whose children also attend this school and understand the value of the care being provided; however, these contributions are not enough for Deborah to cover the costs associated with this school. As of this month, Deborah is facing the reality of having to close her doors due to lack of funds. If this happens, approximately 20 children who are currently boarding at this school will become homeless, and 60 more will be unable to finish their primary education, as they will likely be declined from traditional schools from discrimination related to their disease/disability.
Like us, most of the people viewing this page come from countries where school-aged children receive an education for free, regardless of their life circumstances. For this reason, we have decided to raise as much money as possible to be donated directly to Divine Daycare and Junior School, in hopes that we can all work together to keep the doors of this school open.
