Divestment, What is it?

Divestment is the opposite of an investment – it simply means getting rid of stocks, bonds, or investment funds that are unethical or morally ambiguous. - Defined by Fossil Free.

Who we are

Divest JMU is a student-led campaign working to divest James Madison University from fossil fuels companies. Our goal is to pressure key decision-makers at JMU to divest the money it currently has invested in the fossil fuel industry and reinvest into a  more socially responsible portfolio. We seek to take action for climate justice on campus and in our community.

Urgency For Active Involvement

Climate talks like just like COP21 have been going on for decades now, with nearly no implemented results to show for it. Although many were hopeful the Paris talks would be the gathering to change all that, the global climate community has seen that this is unlikely.

We at Divest JMU, along with the global climate justice community, will not be pacified by the simple discussion of these issues. If we cannot count on our political representatives to take intentional and meaningful action, we the people must elect to do it ourselves.

What we need

We just sent 25+ students to "Our Generation, Our Choice" in D.C. to take action on climate, race and immigration issues and get trained on direct action. We're excited to bring our experiences back to JMU and Harrisonburg and continue building power.

Our dreams are big, but our wallets are empty. We need your help to run the best campaign possible. Your support can go a long way to helping us buy materials, send leaders to trainings and hold strategy/training retreats. But most of all, your donation can help us in sending this narrative of social and environmental responsibility as far and wide as possible - to students, community members and administrators alike.

The student campaign for Divestment is a true  grassroots movement, and by donating with us today you are getting directly involved in the democratic process, and aiding us in our effort to create and cultivate change.

Why we do this work

A few years ago, people said that fossil fuel divestment had no impact. Today, institutions representing over $2.7 trillion have divested. Even G-20's Financial Stability Board (representing the 20 major world economies) is considering divestment.

We're not content to rest on these victories. The power of the fossil fuel industry still overwhelms any hope of averting climate catastrophe. We know we need to reach unprecedented levels of organization and commitment in order to surpass their influence.
