Cass Community Social Services

Fighting poverty, creating opportunity, building community. That is the mission of Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) and with more than 700,000 meals served, 900 men, women, and children housed, and 70 residents employed annually, they do an incredible job at meeting basic needs.

However, it’s clear that while the homeless community has just enough means to survive, that isn’t enough. They are just as human as you and I, yet we don’t see them for the human beings they are. Their wants and desires, their struggles and trauma are all a part of the human journey we are on, yet we assume just food and housing will suffice. It isn’t so black and white. In order to achieve their full potential, the residents need more than the basics. They need to create. They need to express. They need to belong.

Let’s bring color back into their lives.

The Solution

Residents at CCSS have untold stories which, if shared, have the power to transform themselves and inspire the community. However, they need a space, resources, and skills training, to tap into this power. To empower residents through art and creative expression, CCSS and the Ford Fund are teaming up to build the first-ever Arts Sanctuary.  This space, centrally located on the CCSS campus, will host experiences like open studio hours, music lessons, writing courses, and storytelling workshops. It will enable residents to reclaim their agency.

Here, residents will have the freedom to explore themselves, learn how to share their story, and raise awareness for the greater community. No matter what part of the journey residents may be on -- transitional or permanent - all are welcome to create and build the community together.

You can help make this possible.

The Campaign

This Giving Tuesday, we are raising the startup costs for the Art Sanctuary space. The Ford Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is matching donations for this campaign up-to $10,000. Big or small, $5,000 or $10, your donation will be doubled. So give generously, you have twice as much power to recolor lives on this Giving Tuesday!

Ford Fund has been a longtime supporter of Cass Community Social Services. Most weeks you will find teams of Ford volunteers at the nonprofit working on various projects. The Ford Fund is also one of the first investors in the Detroit Tiny Home neighborhood on Cass’ campus. In recent years, Ford’s Thirty Under 30 classes have worked closely with the nonprofit, first with the innovative Ford Mobile Farm and now an Art Sanctuary space.
