Dear Friends,
My name is Deona Johnson and I am from Oakland, CA. I am a candidate for Miss United Negro College Fund/Jarvis Christian College for the 2016-2017 academic year. As a candidate, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).
I am classified as a sophomore, majoring in Criminal Justice at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX. Through my hard work and perseverance thus far in my academic career, I have achieved the honor of being a Dean’s List awardee, been a contributing member of the JCC Track and Cross Country teams, and a proud member of the Pre Alumni Council.
A large part of my responsibilities as a candidate for Miss UNCF is to raise money through fundraising and donations to benefit future collegiate scholars. The candidate who raises the most money will be awarded the title of Miss UNCF and will have the honor of representing Jarvis Christian College in the national competition in Atlanta, GA in February, 2017.
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was founded in 1946 by Fisk University alumni who made it their mission to strengthen historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Since its inception, the UNCF has become an extremely effective organization. To date, 37 historically black colleges and universities make up the UNCF network. With the assistance and support of the UNCF these HBCUs are able to offer affordable and competitive education to their students. Through its efforts the UNCF is making the dreams of earning a college education a reality for thousands of students like myself. I would like nothing more than to represent such an extraordinary organization.
With your support, the UNCF can continue to make higher education available to students who may not otherwise have an opportunity to attend college. Any monetary assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated and is tax deductible as well.
